2001 Yard Garden and Patio Show Report
Prescott Bluebird Recovery Project was honored to be the guests of KXL's "In The Garden With Mike Darcy" at this years 2001 Yard Garden and Patio Show held February 23, 24,and 25 at the Oregon Convention Center.  Mike Darcy has been a truly dedicated enthusiast of the Western Bluebird and Prescott's efforts and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to him.  This is a wonderfully unique opportunity for Prescott to reach the general public in furthering our educational goal of providing information and supplies in our quest to provide nesting rehabitation for the Western Bluebird in the Willamette Valley.

Our primary focus was to provide nesting boxes to the public AND information about the Western Bluebird including their primary predators, house sparrows, raccoons and cats.  Through the generous donation of plywood from TVBS our special carpenter angel, Jack Stennett along with the ever creative Prescott Nest Box Coordinator, Dan Brown, arduously cut and packaged numerous ready to assemble kits.  The majority of boxes were for bluebirds with the 1 1/2" hole opening, however, we did distribute several chickadee nesting boxes with their 1 1/4" opening for the urban gardens.  A $10.00 donation to PBRP was gratefully accepted.

During the YGP show we distributed 84 "workhorse" nesting boxes either via the kit approach OR assembled on site.  It is THE highlight of our booth to watch the "hands on" work of our dedicated volunteer carpenters assembling kits into ready to use nesting boxes.  Folks were encourage to drop by and either watch or help in the construction of their own nesting boxes. To watch the children and adults alike be so enchanted and enthused in helping our little blue feather friends is very gratifying.

Our volunteer carpenters led by Dan Brown included Dave Elliott, Dave Flaming,  Ron Kunzman, Sam Pointer, Charlie Stalzer and Jeff Weise. The volunteers who offered written and verbal information were Pat Johnston, Shelly Othus, Lauri Kunzman, Larie Stalzer and Corinne Stefanick. Thank you all!

We look forward to the 2002 Yard Garden and Patio Show to further reach and teach our Bluebird mission.
